Three elected student officers manage chapter activities and serve as representatives for the organization: the student president, the student vice president, and the student chief communications officer. These officers are also voting members of the ILSA Board of Directors.

Running for an Elected Office

Student-members from any ILSA Chapter may run for an elected office. A student may declare his or her candidacy in the following way:

Submit a Declaration of Candidacy Form and a Statement of Intent to the ILSA Executive Office at president@ilsa.org. The Statement of Intent is written by the student-candidate and describes his background, affiliation with ILSA, and reasons for running for an elected office. There is no set format for the Statement of Intent. However, the candidate should at least indicate whether he/she will be at the ILSA Spring Congress for the election. These documents must be sent to Molly McNab at president@ilsa.org on or before March 12, 2010.

All ILSA Chapters and individual members may vote at the Student Officer Elections. Voting will take place both before (via email) and at the Spring Congress meeting.

The Statements of Intent will be circulated to all ILSA Chapter Members by email. Although students may run for an election position without attending the ILSA Spring Congress where voting will also occur, all candidates are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to attend the ILSA Congress and ILSA Spring Conference in Washington DC, as the winners of the election will be able to meet the ILSA staff and the outgoing ILSA student officers, who will be able to impart important information to the new officers. These in-person meetings are very important, as the work of the new student officers begins immediately upon the outcome of the election. Moreover, candidates that attend the ILSA Congress and Spring Conference will be able to meet many ILSA student members. This is also very important, as the elected student officers will represent these and all other ILSA members at Board Meetings and at international law events.

Campaigning for Office

Student-candidates must conduct their campaigns according to the following rules:

• Candidates may not campaign by sending ILSA members emails, mailings, or any by making other postings online or otherwise.
• A candidate who attends Spring Conference may campaign for him or herself only at the Spring Conference meeting and not before.
• Posters, flyers, buttons and all other election propaganda are prohibited.
• Candidates may not campaign by sending ILSA members emails, mailings, or any by making other postings online or otherwise.
• The current student officers may not actively support or campaign for a candidate. HOWEVER, current student officers seeking reelection or election to a different officer may campaign for themselves.
• The ILSA Executive Office will send all of the Statements of Intent it receives to registered ILSA Chapters on Monday, March 15, 2010. All chapter members should review the Statements of Intent before voting for candidates.

Voting Procedures

The following rules will be observed during the voting process:

• Chapters may vote one time for each student officer position. Voting is conducted by (1) email from the registered Chapter’s Chief Officer, or (2) by secret ballot at the ILSA Congress meeting in Washington DC.
• If the Chapter is voting by email, the votes—one for each student officer position—must be sent to the current chief communications officer Michelle Keith at cco@ilsa.org on or before March 25, 2010, at 6:00pm Eastern Standard Time. The email should be sent either from the Chapter’s email address as indicated on the 2009-2010 Chapter Registration form submitted to the ILSA Executive Office, or from the Chief Officer email indicated on that same form.
• Chapters may also vote in person at the ILSA Congress Meeting. Chapter votes are cast by the Chapter’s Chief Officer. If the Chief Officer cannot attend, another Chapter Member may cast the vote on behalf of the Chapter. This Chapter Member will need to present written authorization from the Chief Officer indicating that this Chapter Member is empowered to vote.
• The winner will be announced March 27, 2010 via email to all registered ILSA Chapters.
