The world is confronted with the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The evolving crisis, which began within the world’s major financial centers, has spread throughout the global economy, causing severe social, political and economic impacts. This crisis is negatively affecting all countries, particularly developing countries, and threatening the livelihoods, well-being and development opportunities of millions of people. Governments responded with massive emergency measures, but the crisis continued to spread and large numbers of workers have been laid off all over the world. Many see the crisis as an opportunity for renewed regulation and democratic re-structuring of the global economy. But solutions are complicated because the lack of strong global institutions and overlapping crises in the developing countries and international law.
The International Law Society of Thomas M. Cooley Law School will host the ILSA 2009 Fall Conference: Global Financial Reform-International Law Intersecting the New World Economy. The conference will examine the role of international law in combating the global financial crisis. Topics to be discussed include:
