Now in its 49th year, the Jessup Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from more than 500 law schools in over 80 countries. The U.S. Super Regionals are branded as the most competitive qualifying competitions of any moot court contest. Each region will have 22-24 schools competing, but only two will advance to the world championship.
The Jessup Competition is an advocacy contest in which teams of students write briefs and present oral arguments before a simulated International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. The competition starts in September with the release of a fact pattern describing a fictional legal dispute between two countries, and culminates with the world championship Shearman & Sterling International Rounds, where teams from all corners of the globe come together for a week of competition and cultural events.
Written by a committee of leading scholars, the Jessup Problem is designed to address important and timely issues in international law. This year’s problem addresses difficult legal questions in the areas of terrorism and human rights.
ILSA would like to thank the above institutions for agreeing to host the U.S. Super Regionals. We look forward to working with each host and with the broader legal community to make each Regional Competition a rewarding experience for the participants and all others involved.
[The International Law Students Association (ILSA) is a worldwide association of law students and legal professionals dedicated to the promotion of international law. In addition to the Jessup Competition, ILSA administers a variety of educational programs, including the organization of three annual conferences, the publication of various written works and periodicals, and the global coordination of student chapter organizations devoted to international law.]
