The Summer Courses constitute the Academy’s primary activity. Since the very outset in 1923 thousands of students from over 100 nationalities have been able to attend them. Many alumni, having thus had the opportunity to meet “great names” in the field of international law, have subsequently gone on to become themselves well-known academics, lawyers or diplomats, among other occupations.

The courses are designed for students and practitioners who have a background in public or private international law. The classes are taught in English or French and are simultaneously translated into the other language. The Academy entrusts these courses to renowned academics, diplomats and practitioners from various institutions around the world. The courses take place during a six-week session in July and August, starting with a three-week period devoted to public international law, and followed by a similar three-week period on private international law. They are subsequently published in the famous Collected Courses book series of The Hague Academy of International Law. To complement the courses, the Academy organizes a variety of social activities including visits to the main international institutions based in The Hague.

A merit-based scholarship programme allows around 20% of attendees to receive support from States, public and private bodies and from personalities from various countries.
