2010 U.S. SUPER REGIONAL RESULTS
2010 U.S. SUPER REGIONAL ASSIGNMENTS
COMPETITION FORMAT
In May 2007, the ILSA Board of Directors approved a plan to restructure the U.S. qualifying rounds of the Jessup Competition by consolidating from twelve regions (12-14 schools per region) to six regions (22-26 schools per region). Because the new regions are double the size of the old regions, these new qualifying competitions have become known as the "U.S. Super Regionals." Both the winning team and the second-place team at each Super Regional will advance to the International Rounds of the Jessup Competition in Washington, D.C.
The reasons for the transition are very straight-forward. Under the old format, regional competitions were held at different host institutions in different cities each year. This model proved inefficient since it relied upon participating schools to host on a rotating basis, and required ILSA to secure twelve new hosts and train twelve new administrators every year. With venues changing from year to year, there was little administrative continuity and no opportunity to create a strong base of judges and volunteer staff. By consolidating the regions and establishing fixed venues in key cities, the hope is that the new model will cure these inefficiencies, improve the quality of the competition and help make each regional a premier local event for the international legal community.
Events for each Super Regional Competition will be scheduled from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon. In addition to the oral rounds, there will be receptions and a keynote speech to involve the entire legal community in the competition.
MEMORIAL SUBMISSION
Please note the following about the Memorial submission process:
- There is no requirement to mail paper memorials.
- There is also no requirement to email memorials to opponents.
- Your team's only responsibility with respect to Memorial Submission is to send the Memorials by email to jessup@ilsa.org by 11:59pm, your local time, on January 12, 2010. This satisfies the requirement to send Memorials to your Administrator and to the ILSA Executive Office.
- Both Memorials should be attached to the same email and may be submitted only once. Resubmission of Memorials will cause a team to incur a resubmission penalty.
- We will confirm receipt of Memorials as soon as possible. Please allow one hour for our confirmation on the day of the deadline.
- You must mark your Memorial Covers with your team number as required under Official Rule 6.3.2. Team numbers were included in the payment receipt sent to your team contact upon completion of the registration process. If you are unsure of your team number, please email the Jessup Competition Coordinator (jessup@ilsa.org).
REGIONAL ASSIGNMENTS, COMPETITION SCHEDULES AND OPPONENT MEMORIALS
- Teams will be informed of their regional assignment in late-November, after the U.S. Registration deadline has passed. Each year, the distribution of teams across the country varies, often significantly, which affects how the regions are drawn. This means your team may not be assigned to the same region as in prior years. The ILSA Executive Office cannot give teams any guarantees or advance notice about regional assignments.
- A Tentative Schedule of Events for each Super Regional will be posted on this page in early January.
- Your exact Preliminary Round Schedule (indicating which teams you will face in which rounds) will not be available until a later date. Regional Administrators will distribute your preliminary round schedule along with electronic copies of your opponents' memorials at least two weeks prior to the date of your competition.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
- All traveling teams should plan to arrive by Thursday late-afternoon. An orientation will be held on Thursday evening, with competition rounds starting on Friday morning. Since the final round will be scheduled for Sunday afternoon, all teams should plan to depart no earlier than Sunday early evening.
- ILSA will try to secure a block of rooms at a discount rate at a hotel for each Super Regional Competition. Information on rates and making reservations will be posted here.
